My Story

"Songwriting kinda happened by accident..."

"I started to play piano when I was 3...

...and guitar when I was 16."

"My first album was pretty vulnerable...

...but I didn't intend for it to be."

Thank you for visiting ‘my story’.

I’m excited you want to know more about me; who I am, where I came from, and how I ended up pursuing a career in music! As a child I was placed in classical piano lessons, my mother had always wanted piano lessons for herself growing up, so she made it a priority for her children to learn. Unfortunately, despite her intent, my passion for piano did not match her own. My love of music didn't come around until much later at age seventeen when I learned to play acoustic guitar to be in a rock band. As with the majority of high school garage bands, we broke up and went our own ways. Eight years after that band broke up, the lead singer and I got together again for a bi-weekly cover song gig at a pub. Performing every week helped start the process of feeling more comfortable on stage, and gave me huge strides in confidence as an entertaining performer.

The biggest challenges I have faced in the pursuit of a solo career are stage fright and prioritising time to write my own songs. In the fall of 2006, I still did not know if I had it in me to pursue music on my own but I really wanted to give it a try, so I recorded my first album in my bedroom and released it in the summer of 2007. With my first album in hand and a bit of courage, I moved to Santa Monica California and played in the streets in hopes of having my music heard. Performing on my own like that was both terrifying and exhilarating. When I moved back to Vancouver three months later, the little confidence I had in myself was growing and I knew that music was going to be my life.

Fast forward to 2013 - despite having recorded four albums and performing my own music, I was still stuck in cover song gigs to make a living. I felt that if I did not somehow get a clean break from them I’ll never get out. To do original music for a living I needed to make a big change, so in 2013 I sold my house and car and hopped on a plane to Berlin, Germany. These last three years in Eruope have been best years of my life as a performer. I’ve grown and learned to love people through my music and give them all I am on stage. Living in a new country doing my own original music as a full-time career continues to present challenges, but it makes life exciting. I am grateful for everyone that has supported me and all the friends I’ve made along the way.

As of today, I have written and co-written over 200 songs, several of which have been on the radio in Canada and Germany and have won awards in songwriting contests. I have sold over 7,000 albums, performed over 600 shows in 19 countries worldwide, and my YouTube channel has amassed over 400,000 views.

Thank you for taking the time to read about my story! If we have not met in person yet, I look forward to meeting you in the future at a show!!  Hearts and hugs always,

-db
